“ALL EXTRAORDINARY THINGS ARE OPPOSED AND RIDICULED AT FIRST,” says Jari Kuosma as he muses on the Wright brothers’ pursuit of flight. he might as well be talking about his life’s work. Kuosma is the inventor of the Birdman wingsuit, a radical suit that has facilitated an entirely new kind of skydiving and brought man closer to his oldest dream.
At 43 years old, the very public life of this Finnish skydiver, entrepreneur and adrenalin junkie is hardly over. having succeeded in making wingsuit flying a safe and popular sport among skydivers and BASe jumpers, Kuosma now plans to design “wingsuits for the next generation”. he also hopes to draw non-divers to the sport. “It’s the stuff dreams are made of and everybody should experience the beauty of it at least once. I believe it makes us better human beings when we are close to life and death and see things from a perspective,” he says.

"AS THE PLANE CLIMBS THROUGH THE BLUE SKY ABOVE DELAND, FLORIDA, WE GO OVER THE PLAN ONE MORE TIME. THE GIANT BELGIAN AND I — WE’RE STRAPPED TOGETHER — WILL JUMP FIRST AND HURL TO EARTH AT 120 MILES PER HOUR.
After 30 seconds or so, our parachute will open and then we will look directly up to see Jan Kuosma flying in our direction. The flyby is made possible by Kuosma’s odd garb: a strange white jumper with red webbing between the legs and triangular “wings” connecting the arms and the torso. “If I hit you on the way down,” Kuosma cheerfully adds byway of ending the briefing, “you die.”
Kuosma is president and owner of BirdMan Inc., the world’s first and largest purveyor of “wingsuits.” Anyone who’s logged 200 jumps can buy one of these getups for $618.00 and experience an entirely new kind of skydiving."

The wingsuit is an outfit that resembles the anatomy of a flying squirrel. The space between the arms and legs is webbed, with a parachute-like fabric acting as your ‘wings.’ The wings inflate in such a waythat the body becomes aerodynamically streamlined: the entire back of the suit becomes curved, and the front (facing down) remains flat. Conventional science tells us that this shape accounts for higher air pressure below the suit, giving it upward lift, working in much the same manner as the wing of an airplane. (...)"

IN AUGUST 1998 just a few days after meeting for the first time, Jari Kuosma and Robert Pecnik drove from Slovenia to Arco, Italy, to leaf off a 3,000-foot cliff. For Kuosma, this was not an entirely novel activity. He´d begun throwing himself from tall earthbound structures - BASE jumping - the previous year and gad maybe a doxen jumps to his credit. (...)
Standing atop the Arco cliff just four months later, Kuosma and Pecnik knew about all this - de Gayrdon´s recent death the sports 96 percent fatality rate. Nevertheless, they resolved in that moment not only to design their own wingsuit but to do something even crazier: to build a business around selling them to skydivers. (...)
Kuosma strips off his flamingo suit, repacks his parachute for another day, and heads to the trop zone bar for a pint of Australian lager. He´s wearing neon orange pants and a blue T-shirt.
